It is important for us to know the number of different colors to be used in a graphic for a number of reasons. The most important being that we may have to match something existing (i.e. a website, or a flyer). Most magazine prints also have specifications. They may tell you that for a certain price, you may only use a 3 color graphic. This would cause a pretty big conflict if that weren't specified ahead of time.

Adding transparency to an image could be a great effect when used properly. Its a good idea to use a transparent background for a logo considering it could be on just about anything.
